Part of the reason we came up with FriendPC was because I felt extremely lonely one night as I was stressed out, realizing the only thing I wanted to do was talk to someone. Of course being an introverted person in my mid-twenties, my option of Friends to call were remarkably low.

But I still had issues I wanted to talk about with someone. I still had social needs and just wanted someone  to listen to me. Most of my life I’m usually the listener for people problems or when they want to talk about their day. But when I have something I want to say, those people usually bring the conversation about themselves.

This made me ponder about the idea of renting for a Friend to talk to. What if I could hire someone to listen to me for a change? I had to dig deeper into that thought.

Going to a Therapist was overkill when all I wanted to do was release some thoughts I had about work and why put a dent in my pocket because of it. There had to be a cheaper way. 

When I spoke to the other members of my FriendPC team, a question I proposed was, “What if there was a Service that provided people with affordable emotional support in the shape of Virtual Friends?” It sounded crazy at the time, but the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to indulge into the idea and bring it to life.

I think we live in an age where it’s difficult to make friends the same way we did 20 years ago. There’s too much technology in the world and we find ourselves in our homes more than out in the real world. We’re often wrapped up in our own world and we forget how to communicate with others.

Originally I thought people would judge me for wanting to hire a friend to talk to about my thoughts or to pay someone to occasionally text me to see how I was doing.

But then I realized I didn’t really have that many people in my life who normally text me about my day, send me positive feedback, or was willing to ask me about my problems.

I’m normally the one who’s listening to other people problems or initiating the conversation. Now I understand that this rule doesn’t apply to everyone, but I know there’s other people out there who wish they were the center of someone’s attention or had someone who focused on them than the other way around.

This is why I wouldn’t consider it abnormal to hire a Virtual Friend to address my social needs from time to time. Millions of people need to address their problems to Therapists everyday whether it’s online or in person people they don’t have someone who can really listen to them.

Of course our Virtual Friends are not licensed to provide diagnosis or tips on how to handle real medical conditions, but they can provide an ear to listen to you when you want to talk to someone.
